Zero Carbon Castle launches reusuable fairtrade organic cotton bag

Inspired by the great work already done by Rebecca Hoskins in her home village of Modbury in Devon and the 'bag ladies' from Hebden Bridge in west Yorkshire, we decided to see if we could follow their great example and make Castle Road shops plastic bag free.

A few facts first...did you know that the average Briton accepts 240 plastic bags annually (DEFRA 2003 and Guardian Newspaper 2007). Made from petroleum they are mostly used only once. On average we use each plastic bag for 12 minutes before disposing of it (United Nations Environmental Programme).

The waste group undertook a survey of local shops in 2007 to discuss their reaction to them going plastic bag free. Cotton bags were trialled by some of the group and an invitation to our film screening about the damage plastic does to the environment and wildlife together with a sample reusuable cotton bag (as above) was hand delivered to each shop by our waste group. The film screening produced a bumper crowd of over 50 people and you can see a short film about this at local-news.tv . The upshot is that 1000 faitrade and organic cotton Zero Carbon Castle bags were ordered to sell and these are now in a number of independent shops in Castle Road and the Town Centre. If you visit a shop that does not appear to be selling our reusable bag, ask them why!
